Candy's Story
![]()
Candy was born in September 2003. She came to me with a promise that I would at least try to grand her for Carolyn so that she could have her 2nd CFA grand. I can remember picking her up at the airport with her half brother when she was just a 14-week-old kitten. I immediately loved her brother, a laid back high white flashy bicolor with big eyes, and I didn’t pay her much attention in the beginning. Don’t get me wrong she was a pretty little kitten, always had a short cobby body and good weight but, she was a wild little baby calico that needed to learn some show manners and she needed to grow her coat.
As the weeks went by she dramatically improved and was learning her weekly bathing and drying routine. She attended a few shows as a kitten to learn how to behave on the grooming table and judging table. Eventually she figured out that jumping off the table and running around which she attempted multiple times previously was a no-no.
At about seven months I started to notice her transformation from a pretty calico kitten to a beautiful adult with tons of coat. Coat to the floor - your hands got lost in it there was so much. Now everything about her was starting to look really good. At her first adult open show she took several BOB over a large class and made several finals in the top 10 which was very exciting. That very next weekend I fulfilled my promise to Carolyn and Candy became a one show, 4 ring grand. Shortly there after in June at the Great Lakes regional show she was Highest Scoring Cat in Championship so the decision was made to try her for a Regional win and then eventually after she climbed into the top 25 a national win.
The season was long and most stressful for me trying to coordinate a night work schedule with needing weekends off amongst other things and it seemed like impossibility at times. But some how as always I found a way to do it. We hung in there through good times and bad. Bad being when Candy decided it was time to shed her whole coat out mid show season. How depressing that was! The judges that believed in her and could see her adult coat was coming in still loved her regardless and I truly appreciate that. Thank you Barbara Sumner, Annette Wilson, Lynn Search, DJ Thompson, Stan Barnaby and many more. Thank you Donna Jean for your grooming and conditioning tips they really helped in the end. Candy did in fact stay out all season gaining her precious points. At her last show Sign of the Cat she looked marvelous. So to all of you who get discouraged and want to give up keep trying cause you never know what can happen.
All in all this year there were some very nice quality cats and some pretty nice owners too. I would like to take the time though and especially thank Victoria Garvin owner of GC, NW Moirai’s Wedjat, CFA’s 11th Best Cat in Championship 2004-2005 for being a great friend and for keeping me sane this season. You’re the best. I can’t imagine not ever meeting you because of the hotel screw up in Richmond. Hugs to you and Wedgie. I would also like to thank Susan Burton for helping me show Candy early on this season. Your help driving to the shows and flying to Ohio really means a lot and did not go unnoticed. And last but definitely not least many thanks to Carolyn Haynie “Purrzone cattery” for entrusting precious Candy to me. She was a joy to show and I hope you are as proud of her success as I am.
